Privado ID CPO Insights on Data Privacy

Worldcoin, created by Open AI CEO Sam Altman and partners, launched in July last year aiming to establish a global digital ID system and currency. The project quickly drew controversy over its collection of biometric data but attracted over 2 million users during its initial rollout.

Worldcoin uses iris-scanning orbs and has expanded to 119 devices across 18 countries, with plans to increase to 1500 globally. Despite regulatory scrutiny, the World App has garnered over 10 million users. The Secure Multi-Party Computation system encrypts iris data into secret shares to enhance security.

However, issues of governance and transparency remain, according to Sebastian Rodriguez, CPO at Privado ID. Centralizing biometric verification raises ethical concerns, particularly around data privacy and monopolistic tendencies.

Worldcoin’s approach demonstrates both potential and pitfalls, highlighting the need for decentralized and transparent identity solutions.
