Swiss Central Bank Extends CBDC Pilot to 2026

The Swiss National Bank (SNB) has extended its digital franc pilot until at least 2026. Initially set to end on June 30, the pilot now aims to include more financial institutions over time.

Six commercial banks, including UBS Group AG and Commerzbank AG, are currently participating, collaborating with Swiss stock exchange provider SIX. This pilot focuses on wholesale CBDC, unlike retail pilots in other countries, and has settled significant transactions such as a $226 million World Bank bond.

Antoine Martin from the SNB emphasized that the extension doesn’t guarantee a permanent introduction of wholesale CBDC. The project’s success depends on increased participation and transaction volume.

This extended timeline demonstrates Switzerland’s commitment to exploring innovative financial solutions, potentially reshaping institutional transactions on a global scale.
