Julian Assange, the WikiLeaks founder, was released from Belmarsh prison after over 1,900 days of incarceration. Following his release, the AssangeDAO token (JUSTICE) surged more than 60% in 24 hours.
AssangeDAO, formed in December 2021, aimed to raise funds for Assange’s defense, collecting around 16,593 Ether (ETH), valued at over $56 million. The Wau Holland Foundation managed and disbursed about $37 million of these funds but has yet to provide a full expense report. Members of the DAO, including core contributor Silke Noa, are now calling for transparency regarding fund allocation.
Assange was an early Bitcoin (BTC) investor, seeing crypto as an alternative to traditional payment systems like MasterCard. His release, facilitated by a DAO, highlights crypto’s potential for driving real-world change.
The transparency and accountability of fundraising efforts like this are crucial for maintaining trust and ensuring long-term success in similar initiatives.
