Elon Musk said he supports the idea of merging Tesla and SpaceX, but said a deal is not certain. He said both companies have set up committees of independent directors to discuss it, and that he cannot take part because of a conflict of interest. The committees have not agreed on terms, and Musk said there is no guarantee they will.
Musk said a merger would also need shareholder support, including votes from holders of 50% of all Tesla shares, not just shares voted. The source estimates that a combined company would be worth roughly $3.5 trillion.
