UK Launches First Digitally Native Government Bond

UK Government Appoints Banks for Digital Gilt Pilot Bond

  • The UK government has selected six banks, including Barclays and HSBC, to manage its first digitally native government bond.
  • The pilot for the Digital Gilt Instrument (DIGIT) is expected to launch in the first quarter of 2027.
  • DIGIT will utilize distributed ledger technology (DLT) for its issuance and lifecycle management, including on-chain settlement.
  • Economic Secretary Lucy Rigby emphasized that this initiative aims to enhance digital financial infrastructure in the UK.
  • The project builds on HSBC’s earlier appointment as the DLT supplier and a partnership with the London Stock Exchange Group.

This pilot project represents a significant step towards integrating digital securities into sovereign debt markets, aiming to improve liquidity and market efficiency through regulated infrastructure.

With an anticipated launch in early next year, DIGIT could reshape how capital flows within financial systems by connecting various stages of bond issuance and trading.(Source)
