2024 Breakthrough: Tokenizing Real-World Assets

In 2024, real-world asset (RWA) tokenization is set to reach a breakthrough, driven by blockchain advancements and key institutional players like Euroclear and Goldman Sachs. In 2023, tokenized treasuries emerged, aiming to surpass stablecoins as the largest RWA segment, with volumes growing seven-fold.

Technologies like zero-knowledge proofs and cross-chain communication have optimized transactions, increasing blockchain efficiency and security. Platforms such as Maple and Centrifuge have applied DeFi concepts to traditional finance, enabling investments in tokenized corporate bonds and private credits.

According to DeFi Llama, RWAs in DeFi doubled last year, spurred by institutional infrastructure from Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan. Tokenized US Treasuries saw a nearly ten-fold capital increase, highlighting their stability and appeal.

Additionally, the Islamic finance market may soon see the tokenization of Sukuk, offering halal on-chain investments. While stablecoins still dominate, 2024 could bring new entrants like Ripple’s stablecoin and gold-backed alternatives.

Overall, as RWA tokenization matures, 2024 is poised for broader adoption and innovation, especially in tokenized Treasuries and emerging markets like Sukuk.
