China and the UAE have pledged to enhance cooperation in combating cryptocurrency-related cybercrime. This commitment was made during UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s state visit to China on May 30.
The joint statement addresses growing concerns over telecom network fraud and online gambling linked to cryptocurrencies. Both nations aim to curb illegal activities exploiting digital assets, underscoring a shared determination to tackle these issues.
A standout feature is the recognition of central bank digital currency (CBDC) in enhancing cross-border trade. The UAE’s Digital Dirham, valued at 50 million dirhams, marked the first direct cross-border CBDC transaction, facilitated by the mBridge platform.
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) is developing mBridge with central banks of Hong Kong, China, Thailand, and the UAE, aiming for a mid-2024 launch. This project could provide an alternative to Swift’s payment infrastructure, potentially reducing regional payment fragmentation.
China and the UAE’s cooperative effort extends beyond cybercrime to include fighting money laundering, human trafficking, and other illicit activities. This strategic partnership highlights the long-term importance of secure and regulated digital financial ecosystems.
