Citrea’s Marketing Deception Exposed by Galaxy Ventures

Robin Linus, the author of the BitVM whitepaper, has criticized Citrea, a Bitcoin zero-knowledge rollup backed by Galaxy Ventures, for allegedly making misleading marketing claims. Citrea, which raised $2.7 million in a recent seed round, aims to bring Ethereum-like smart contract functionality to Bitcoin.

Linus voiced concerns on May 30, accusing Citrea of falsely implying a close connection with the BitVM project. Orkun Kılıç, co-founder of Chainway Labs, defended Citrea, stating their marketing accurately reflects their advancements in zero-knowledge technology.

Citrea’s standout feature is its use of zero-knowledge proofs to scale Bitcoin, enhancing privacy and scalability. These cryptographic methods allow proof of knowledge without revealing the information itself, similar to zk-SNARKs in Zcash and zk-rollups in Ethereum.

Citrea’s technical documentation states that its proofs are inscribed in Bitcoin and verified via BitVM. With significant funding, experts see substantial potential for Bitcoin in decentralized finance, possibly attracting up to $225 billion in value through dApps.

This development underscores the strategic importance of integrating advanced cryptographic methods to scale and diversify Bitcoin’s capabilities, potentially reshaping the decentralized finance landscape.
