Russia’s Ministry of Finance, which once proposed imprisonment for Bitcoin trading, now views the crypto industry as essential for economic development. Ivan Chebeskov, director of the financial policy department at the ministry, emphasized this shift during a recent crypto forum in Russia.
Chebeskov highlighted the ministry’s efforts over several years to create a regulatory framework for the crypto market, recognizing its potential to boost the economy and digital technology. Notably, in 2016, the ministry advocated for severe penalties for Bitcoin trading, citing competition concerns with the Russian ruble.
The current stance reflects a significant U-turn, influenced by Russia’s need to navigate Western sanctions by leveraging crypto for international transactions. This change has led major Russian metal producers to use stablecoin USDT for cross-border trades with China.
This strategic pivot underscores the long-term importance of crypto in Russia’s economic resilience and digital innovation.
