Expanding Crypto Business: Major Growth Milestone Achieved

Robinhood, a well-known retail trading platform, announced its acquisition of Bitstamp, a U.K.-based crypto exchange, in a $200 million all-cash deal set to close in early 2025. This acquisition aims to expand Robinhood’s global crypto presence and attract institutional clients through new product offerings.

This marks Robinhood’s first major foray into the institutional crypto market. By leveraging Bitstamp’s established infrastructure and industry-leading products like crypto-as-a-service, institutional lending, and staking, Robinhood can significantly enhance its cryptocurrency offerings.

Johann Kerbrat, general manager of Robinhood Crypto, stated that the acquisition is a “major step in growing our crypto business,” highlighting Bitstamp’s resilience through market cycles. The merger is expected to boost competition in the North American crypto market, where Coinbase currently holds a significant share.

Robinhood emphasized that the merger will maintain transparency and service consistency, with no layoffs or staff changes mentioned. This strategic acquisition underscores Robinhood’s commitment to expanding its footprint outside the U.S. and integrating institutional clients into its platform.
