Israel Launches Digital Shekel Pilot Program

The Bank of Israel is launching the Digital Shekel Challenge, inviting various sectors to develop applications for a central bank digital currency (CBDC). Announced recently, this initiative aims to explore the digital shekel’s potential through a technological prototype that simulates its core system and API layer.

This effort, which began with exploratory research in 2017 and intensified in 2021, involves testing the digital currency with payment service providers and stakeholders to create innovative payment solutions. Participants will develop use cases focusing on micropayments, digital trusts, and data products.

This initiative stands out by fostering collaboration between the Bank of Israel, the private sector, and the government, potentially bridging the gap between the web3 industry and governmental frameworks. The success of this project could have significant long-term implications for Israel’s financial ecosystem, enhancing both monetary policy and financial stability.
