Riot Platforms, a Colorado-based crypto mining company, acquired a 12% stake in rival Bitfarms on June 5, purchasing 1,460,278 shares for over $3.5 million. This acquisition occurred despite shorting pressure from Kerrisdale Capital, which criticized Riot’s Chinese equipment and raised operational concerns.
Riot’s shares initially fell by 9% but rebounded to $9.65 after the Bitfarms purchase announcement. Notably, Riot had made a $950 million acquisition bid for Bitfarms in late May, which Bitfarms rejected, claiming the offer undervalued its growth prospects.
This strategic move by Riot highlights its aggressive expansion in the crypto mining industry, aiming for long-term dominance despite market pressures and competitive challenges.
