Zimbabwe Seeks Input for Crypto Regulations #Crypto

Zimbabwe is seeking public comments from both local and international crypto service providers to create a regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies. The feedback window is open until June 26, as the government aims to integrate emerging tech into its economic plans.

Zimbabwe has been cut off from international capital markets since 1999 due to debt defaults. To stabilize its economy, the country issued a gold-backed digital token in 2023 and introduced a new currency, ZiG, this year. Despite historical caution from the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, these steps indicate a shift towards digital solutions.

Only one-quarter of sub-Saharan African countries have formal crypto regulations, while many others have imposed restrictions or outright bans. Zimbabwe’s initiative to gather public input sets a unique precedent in the region, reflecting its strategic aim to revitalize its economic landscape through modern financial technologies.
