‘Big Short’ Investor Michael Burry Goes Hard on Gold, Invests $10 Million in Q1

Michael Burry, known for his prescient bet against the 2007 subprime mortgage market, has now invested $10 million in physical gold through his firm Scion Asset Management. In the first quarter, Burry’s firm purchased over 440,000 units of the Sprott Physical Gold Trust, a fund primarily investing in gold bullion. This move is notable as it marks a significant investment by a renowned investor in a tangible asset amid economic uncertainties.
What sets this investment apart is the Sprott Physical Gold Trust’s focus on physical gold, offering a hedge against inflation and currency devaluation—attributes not found in gold ETFs or stocks. By investing in a vehicle that holds actual gold, investors like Burry are betting on enduring value, especially in volatile markets.
This strategy underscores the growing interest in physical assets as a safe haven, highlighting gold’s role in diversifying portfolios and protecting against economic downturns.
