The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) is set to introduce restrictions on peer-to-peer (P2P) transactions to tackle illegal financial activities, with measures to be approved within a month. These restrictions will cap individual users at 30 transactions and a total of ₴100,000 (about $2,500) per month. This move is particularly notable as it addresses the surge in P2P transactions observed since fall 2023, marking a significant effort to mitigate tax evasion and other illicit schemes facilitated by digital transactions.
A standout feature of this initiative is its targeted approach, which aims to disrupt the flow of illicit finances while affecting less than 5% of bank clients, ensuring that the majority of law-abiding citizens and volunteers remain unaffected. The decision comes at a time when all cryptocurrency exchanges in Ukraine have halted operations with hryvnia bank cards, highlighting the increasing reliance on P2P platforms in the digital asset ecosystem.
This strategic move by the NBU underscores the delicate balance between fostering financial innovation and ensuring security and compliance within Ukraine’s financial ecosystem. It signals a significant step towards safeguarding the financial system from misuse, setting a precedent for regulatory measures in the digital finance landscape.
