Brazil’s Federal Revenue Service (RFB) plans to summon foreign cryptocurrency exchanges operating in Brazil to ensure compliance with local laws. This initiative comes amid a significant increase in declared crypto assets by Brazilian citizens and growing trading volumes paired with the Brazilian real (BRL).
The RFB aims to scrutinize the operations of exchanges like Binance, Coinbase, OKX, and KuCoin, emphasizing the need for adherence to local regulations. Between January and July 2023, Brazilians declared $24.6 billion in cryptocurrency assets, a 36% increase from the previous period, with $2.6 billion linked to foreign exchanges.
From January to April 2024, crypto trading volume paired with BRL reached $6 billion, highlighting the market’s growth. The Brazilian Senate’s recent bill imposing a 15% tax on digital asset income further underscores the government’s regulatory focus.
The RFB’s engagement with foreign exchanges could significantly impact the global crypto market, shaping operational and compliance standards.
