The Bank of Israel (BOI) has launched a pilot project for a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), known as the digital shekel, to enhance financial technology and digital payments. Inspired by the Rosalind project, this initiative aims to bridge Web3 technologies with government regulations.
BOI’s pilot consists of three stages: application submissions, network access for selected projects, and final presentations. This “sandbox” environment fosters competition and innovation in real-time CBDC payment systems. Experts believe it could benefit Israel’s economy by improving transparency and accountability compared to decentralized cryptocurrencies.
First announced in March 2024, the digital shekel supports instant payments and offline usage. This pilot project is a significant step toward these goals, enhancing financial inclusion and streamlining transactions. By leveraging insights from the Rosalind project, Israel aims to set a precedent for other nations exploring digital currency solutions.
