Latvia to Allow Crypto Tax Payments: 2027

Latvia’s Ministry of Finance has approved a plan to let citizens pay taxes with cryptocurrency as early as 2027, but the payment system is not ready. Authorities have not chosen a provider or decided which cryptocurrencies to accept. An adviser to the prime minister said the launch may depend on the formation of a new government after parliamentary elections.

On Oct. 15, 2026, parliament passed final-reading amendments extending the investment account tax regime to crypto assets: tax will apply when withdrawals exceed deposits, rather than after each transaction. It also approved a one-time declaration for eligible crypto assets, taxed at 10% of their market value as of Dec. 31, 2026. Eligible taxpayers may file from April 1 through May 31, 2027, and must pay by July 23; the declaration is unavailable to people already facing criminal, tax or administrative proceedings related to cryptocurrency income.
