State Secretaries from five U.S. states have accused xAI’s chatbot Grok of spreading misinformation about Vice President Kamala Harris’s eligibility to run in the upcoming presidential elections. The misinformation was disseminated on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.
Grok incorrectly claimed that Harris was ineligible to run due to missed ballot submission deadlines in nine states. This false information spread widely among users, leading to significant confusion. On July 31, 2024, xAI corrected Grok’s responses to reflect accurate information.
The state officials from Pennsylvania, Michigan, Washington, New Mexico, and Minnesota have demanded that xAI ensure accurate information is provided to voters, especially during this critical election year. They emphasize the need for platforms like X to provide truthful voting information to maintain public trust.
