Riot Platforms Q2 2024 Losses: $84.4M Reported

Riot Platforms, a leading Bitcoin miner, reported an $84.4 million net loss for Q2 2024, primarily due to the April 2024 Bitcoin halving event. This event significantly impacted earnings, reducing Bitcoin production by 52% compared to the same period in 2023.

The company’s hash rate stands at 22 EH/s, with plans to increase to 36 EH/s by year-end. Despite the loss, Riot generated $70 million in revenue, with $55.8 million from Bitcoin mining.

Operational costs, including commercial and administrative expenses, exceeded $61 million, further straining the financials. Notably, the average direct cost of mining Bitcoin rose to $25,327 per quarter, compared to $5734 in 2023.

Riot’s stock fell by 13.6% over the past week, trading at $10.19. However, the company remains optimistic, holding 9334 BTC valued at $604 million and planning further expansion and acquisitions to strengthen its market position.

These strategic moves are pivotal as Riot Platforms navigates the challenges posed by the Bitcoin halving and rising operational costs, aiming to enhance its competitive edge in the cryptocurrency mining sector.
