Cheaper AI Use Becoming Problem for Anthropic

Anthropic said in an amended SEC filing that price cuts and customer discounts offset roughly $600 million of third-quarter revenue growth from increased usage. The figure is not revenue that disappeared from its books. Revenue grew 47%, while compute and infrastructure expenses rose about 77%, from $5.56 billion to $9.86 billion.

Anthropic moved from a $974 million operating profit in the second quarter to a $567 million operating loss in the third. The quarter included $5 billion of compute under short-term commitments that Anthropic says cost significantly more than comparable multiyear capacity; a noncash charge also complicates the loss figure. Compute and infrastructure spending includes research, training and internal operations, so it is not a measure of profit on customer requests.
