The Australian Federal Police (AFP) partnered with Chainalysis to fight crypto scams as over 2,000 compromised wallets belonging to Australians were identified. Announced on August 5, the AFP joined “Operation Spincaster” to target criminals using a tactic called “approval phishing.”
Approval phishing tricks victims into authorizing transactions that give scammers control over their wallets. This method has been used in investment and romance scams, leading to over $4 billion in stolen crypto since May 2021.
Key collaborations with BTC Markets, Binance, Crypto.com, and others helped prevent further monetary loss. Despite the unclear recovery of stolen assets, the AFP urges Australians to be cautious with crypto transactions.
This initiative underscores the need for vigilance and highlights the growing threat of approval phishing in the crypto landscape. The long-term importance lies in safeguarding digital assets and preventing future scams.
