Crypto Mining Risks Highlighted by Sen. Warren

Senator Elizabeth Warren warned a Senate committee about the national security risks posed by foreign-owned crypto mining firms in the U.S. She highlighted data showing that one-third of these facilities are Chinese-owned, with some having direct ties to the Chinese government.

Warren referenced a 2024 divestment order against MineOne, a Chinese mining facility near a U.S. Air Force base in Wyoming, flagged as a potential intelligence operation. Assistant Secretary Rosen confirmed that the mining equipment could be used for espionage.

Warren also raised concerns about threats to the U.S. electricity grid, suggesting foreign entities could cause targeted blackouts. She emphasized that these firms use cryptocurrencies to bypass banking systems and anti-money laundering rules, secretly sending millions to China.

The Biden administration has proposed a 30% tax on electricity use by crypto miners, sparking controversy. The long-term importance of this issue lies in safeguarding national security and the integrity of critical infrastructure.
