Binance $6.3B hack sparks pre-election political chatter

Binance said it would cover users’ losses after a reported $6.3 billion hack and that about $3 billion of the stolen funds had been frozen in various locations. The exchange said it was working with law enforcement and others to trace and recover the funds, and promised a report after a full security review. It did not say how much more could be recovered.

President Donald Trump said his administration was looking at the hack. The attack was widely attributed to a North Korean group, but the excerpt does not establish who carried it out. US officials and lawmakers offered competing views on crypto oversight; their claims about regulation and the hack were arguments, not findings about its cause.
