How Binance’s record $6.3B hack unfolded

Hackers stole about $6.3 billion from Binance, according to the excerpt, which calls it the largest cryptocurrency theft on record. Onchain investigators attributed the attack to North Korea-backed hackers. Binance said its investigation found multiple breach points and had not assigned responsibility to any individual; an engineer’s compromised laptop had initially been considered a possible entry point.

Binance said it had set aside more than $6.34 billion in company funds to cover the losses, including $5 billion in the stolen tokens. Withdrawals remained suspended. The exchange aimed to restore them within 40 hours of co-CEO Richard Teng’s Friday update and publish a proof-of-reserves report by Monday. Teng said the attacker used an EIP-7702 delegation to gain control of a hot wallet without normal approvals, while Blockaid’s CEO said the theft could have happened without EIP-7702.
