Quantum Computers Threaten Crypto Security Locks

EU Warns Quantum Computing Could Compromise Cryptocurrency Security

  • The European Banking Authority, European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority, and European Securities and Markets Authority issued a warning about quantum computing risks to blockchain cryptography.
  • Google Quantum AI reported that breaking cryptocurrency cryptography may require approximately 20 times fewer physical qubits than previously estimated.
  • Currently, no quantum computer exists that can execute such an attack on blockchain systems.
  • Bitcoin developer Jameson Lopp proposed changes to Bitcoin’s signature system in February, which have not yet been adopted.
  • The Ethereum Foundation plans to enhance its network’s resistance to quantum attacks by December 2029.

As quantum computing technology advances, the integrity of cryptocurrencies could be at risk due to vulnerabilities in their cryptographic foundations. This concern is heightened by recent assessments indicating that potential attacks could be more feasible than previously thought.

The EU’s warning highlights significant security challenges for cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum, particularly as they work towards implementing protective measures against future quantum threats. (Source)
