A cybersecurity expert criticized Google for insufficient measures against crypto-targeted deepfakes involving Bitcoin and Elon Musk. Recently, scammers used a fake video of Musk on YouTube to steal cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, from unsuspecting users.
These bad actors created YouTube Live sessions, directing users to deposit BTC on various websites, amassing hundreds of thousands of views. The losses remain unknown. Michael Marcotte, founder of the National Cybersecurity Center, noted the attack was a personal strike on Musk and could undermine consumer confidence in Bitcoin.
Hackers utilized Russian domain name registrars for the scam, aiming to mislead law enforcement. Marcotte emphasized that scammers mimicked a verified Tesla YouTube account with nearly one million followers, questioning Google’s policies.
Google has faced recurring complaints about unchecked attack vectors leading to crypto losses, including a fake Aggr Chrome extension and harmful paid ads. Despite Alphabet’s efforts to combat scammers, experts agree more needs to be done.
Marcotte stressed the need for the industry to recognize the blurred line between real and fake. This incident serves as a crucial wake-up call for stronger cybersecurity measures.
