Scammers have stolen $2 million worth of cryptocurrency assets from an OKX user using sophisticated deepfake AI techniques. The attackers exploited the identity of Lai Japanese Fang Chang, allegedly obtained from a leaked Telegram data breach.
They accessed Chang’s OKX account through the “forgotten password” option and used deepfake videos to change his security settings, including his email, phone number, and Google authenticator. Within 24 hours, $2 million was drained from his account.
OKX is helping the victim recover his account and has taken legal action against the attackers. This incident follows previous attacks on OKX, including a $430,000 exploit on OKX Dex and another breach where a user lost 50,000 Trc-20 USDT due to page hijacking.
Centralized cryptocurrency exchanges have frequently been targeted. Recent hacks include a $305 million breach at DMM Bitcoin and a $7 million theft from CoinsPaid. The use of AI-powered tools, such as deepfake videos, raises significant ethical concerns within the industry.
The strategic importance lies in the increasing sophistication of cyber-attacks, emphasizing the need for enhanced security measures and ethical standards in the crypto industry.
