On July 9, 2024, a hacker behind the CoinStats breach transferred 548.2 ETH to Tornado Cash. The assets, valued at over $1.69 million, were moved shortly after the late June 2024 hack.
Two wallets identified as CoinStats Exploiters conducted the transfers—first 211 ETH, followed by 337.2 ETH within an hour. CoinStats, a crypto portfolio tracker, faced a significant security breach, resulting in around $2 million in losses.
CertiK analysts noted these transactions, reflecting the strategic use of crypto mixers like Tornado Cash to hide illicit activities. The second quarter of 2024 saw $630 million lost to hacks, a 900% increase in stolen assets from centralized exchanges compared to the same period in 2023.
The CoinStats hack underscores the need for enhanced security in the crypto market. Ongoing vigilance and advanced security solutions are crucial to protecting digital assets.
