The DeFi platform UwU Lend has reportedly been hacked, resulting in an estimated loss of $19.5 million. This breach was identified by Cyvers, a leading cybersecurity firm, which detected suspicious transactions converting stolen assets to Ethereum.
Initially, Cyvers estimated damages at $14 million, but within an hour, this figure rose to $19.5 million, with ongoing transactions suggesting the final loss might exceed $20 million. The hacker exploited a vulnerability in UwU Lend’s lending contract, converting assets like WBTC and DAI to ETH.
Arkham Intelligence confirmed the findings, showing the stolen Ethereum being distributed across various wallets. UwU Lend’s developers have temporarily suspended the protocol to investigate the breach.
This incident highlights the urgent need for enhanced security in the DeFi sector. It underscores growing cybersecurity challenges, as noted by a PeckShield report showing a 666% increase in cyber incident damages in May 2024 compared to the previous month. The strategic importance of this event lies in its potential impact on trust and stability in the cryptocurrency market.
