Ethereum Research Proposes Post-Quantum Signature Scheme

  • An Ethereum Research proposal introduces a post-quantum signature verification method for the EVM.
  • The approach is based on SPHINCS+ and optimized for Ethereum’s execution model using KECCAK256 instead of SHAKE256.
  • Verification gas costs are estimated between approximately 127,000 to 150,000, higher than normal but feasible for high-value transactions.

The proposal by Ethereum researcher nicocsgy aims to enable quantum-resistant signature verification within the existing EVM framework without requiring a full protocol upgrade. This could provide a practical migration path as quantum threats become more pressing.
