Attackers stole roughly $6.4 billion from Binance hot wallets, according to estimates from Chainalysis and TRM Labs. The breach targeted Binance’s systems, not the blockchains. Binance initially traced it to a compromised engineer’s laptop but later said it found additional points of breach; it said it had no evidence that wallet private keys were leaked.
Binance said customer assets were not touched and promised to cover the losses with company funds and an emergency reserve. It has set aside more than $6.34 billion, but withdrawals remain paused while it rebuilds and tests its systems; deposits are operating normally. Stablecoin issuers have frozen funds tied to the attack, while security firm Elliptic estimated the attacker still controls about $3.3 billion.
