Hong Kong considers allowing staking for Ethereum ETFs, diverging from US stance

Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) is exploring the possibility of allowing Ethereum ETFs to engage in staking, diverging from the cautious approach of US regulators. This initiative follows the SFC’s groundbreaking approval of spot Ethereum ETFs, marking a significant step in the integration of crypto assets into regulated financial products. Staking could enhance the appeal of Ethereum ETFs in Hong Kong, which have seen modest trading volumes, with only 13,380 ETH held as of May 22.

While US authorities, including the SEC, scrutinize staking under securities laws, leading to legal challenges against firms like Kraken and Coinbase, Hong Kong’s contrasting stance could position it as a more attractive destination for crypto investment and innovation. This move underscores Hong Kong’s ambition to establish itself as a hub for crypto finance, potentially influencing global regulatory trends in the long term.
