Ethereum Surges to 200 Million Gas Per Block

Ethereum’s Glamsterdam Upgrade Boosts Gas Limit Significantly

  • The Ethereum Glamsterdam upgrade is currently running on the Sepolia test network.
  • The gas limit for blocks has increased to nearly 200 million, up from approximately 60 million.
  • Developers are testing changes aimed at accommodating more transactions and payments on the blockchain.
  • Test results show that recent blocks used between 52 million to 92 million gas, about 26% to 46% of the new limit.
  • The upgrade also modifies how much gas specific tasks consume, impacting overall transaction capacity.

The increase in gas limit allows for greater processing capacity on Ethereum, which is crucial as user competition for transaction space can drive fees higher during peak times. This enhancement aims to alleviate such pressures by accommodating more activity before congestion occurs.

With the new block limit nearing a substantial increase, Ethereum’s network could potentially handle more transactions efficiently, as indicated by current test usage of only up to about half of the available gas per block.
