Virgil Griffith, an Ethereum developer, had his prison sentence reduced by seven months this week. Griffith was initially sentenced to 63 months in April 2022 for violating sanctions by visiting North Korea in 2019 to give a speech on using cryptocurrency to evade sanctions.
District Judge Kevin Castel reduced the term to 56 months, acknowledging Griffith’s misconduct and challenges during incarceration. Despite Griffith’s continued defiance in prison, the judge noted the reduced public danger from future crimes.
Griffith, who pleaded guilty in 2021, expressed remorse and reflected on his actions. His defense argued for leniency due to his lack of criminal history and the absence of financial harm. However, U.S. Attorney Damian Williams opposed the reduction, emphasizing Griffith’s intent to assist North Korea.
The U.S. Dept. of Commerce also imposed a 10-year export privilege denial on Griffith, preventing him from engaging in export-controlled activities until 2032. This case underscores the severe consequences of breaching international sanctions and the importance of upholding justice for national security.
