On June 30, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin published a blog post proposing a new SSF mechanism for Ethereum.
This change aims to improve transaction latency by moving away from the current epoch-and-slot method. Currently, Ethereum’s 12.8-minute finality period is slow and complex. Buterin’s SSF mechanism would finalize Block-N before Block N+1 is created, speeding up finality.
The standout feature of SSF is its ability to continue even if one-third of validators go offline, enhancing security. However, SSF requires every Ethereum staker to send two messages every 12 seconds, which is challenging.
Despite these challenges, innovations like Orbit SSF could reduce validator load and lower the 32 ETH staking minimum. Ethereum developers are actively exploring solutions to optimize finality.
This strategic shift aims to make Ethereum more efficient and user-friendly, potentially transforming its ecosystem.
