Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has proposed new strategies to reduce transaction confirmation times on the Ethereum network. In a June 30 blog post, he highlighted the need for improvements, despite the system already being much better than five years ago.
Buterin suggested methods like single-slot finality (SSF) to replace the current slot and epoch architecture. He noted that SSF could demand every Ethereum staker to publish messages every 12 seconds, increasing the load on the chain.
Another proposal involves “based preconfirmations,” allowing users to offer extra fees for immediate transaction guarantees. This could benefit layer-2 solutions like Optimism and Arbitrum.
Ethereum’s average block time is around 12 seconds, faster than Bitcoin’s 10 minutes but slower than Solana’s 0.4 seconds. Long-term, these enhancements could significantly improve user experience and maintain Ethereum’s competitive edge.
