Ethereum team lead Péter Szilágyi revealed that many Ethereum clients “very aggressively” delete old chain segments, raising concerns about the network’s heavy reliance on the Geth client. In a May 27 post, Szilágyi highlighted the potential risks this poses to data availability and network decentralization.
Historically, Ethereum has faced debates similar to Bitcoin’s regarding storage models and full nodes. Szilágyi pointed out that while deleting old data optimizes storage short-term, it jeopardizes long-term resilience.
One standout aspect is Szilágyi’s warning that as more data is discarded, fewer nodes will store it, making it hard to retrieve. Over 40% of Ethereum clients depend on Geth, prompting companies like Coinbase to explore alternative solutions.
