Coinbase, a leading cryptocurrency exchange, has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. The company alleges that these federal agencies have not complied with Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests.
Coinbase is seeking a court order to compel the SEC and FDIC to release the requested information. The exchange suggests that these regulatory bodies have been using measures to hinder the growth of the crypto industry by cutting off its banking sector access. This lawsuit aims to reveal the FDIC’s involvement in what Coinbase calls an unlawful scheme.
The FOIA requests to the SEC specifically sought information on the agency’s stance on Ethereum (ETH). This move follows a recent lawsuit by Consensys, a blockchain software firm, against the SEC. According to Coinbase’s complaint, various federal financial regulators have been trying to cripple the digital-asset industry for nearly two years.
The strategic importance of this lawsuit lies in its potential to increase transparency and possibly reshape how regulatory bodies interact with the crypto industry, influencing its future growth and stability.
