The renomination of anti-crypto SEC Commissioner Caroline Crenshaw might be delayed until after the US 2024 Elections due to potential changes in the Senate and White House. Crenshaw is expected to progress through the Senate Banking Committee but faces a full Senate vote that could be postponed.
This delay is due to limited legislative days and other priorities for Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. If the administration changes, the President can designate a new SEC Chair, shifting the balance of power within the SEC.
Even if Crenshaw is confirmed and Gary Gensler remains, the SEC would maintain a Democratic majority. This majority could persist until 2026, depending on Gensler’s decision to stay or leave.
Senator Bill Hagerty recently questioned Crenshaw on her stance against spot Bitcoin ETFs, citing concerns over fraud in global spot markets. Hagerty criticized her anti-crypto views and her use of the SEC position to push climate agendas.
The strategic importance of this renomination lies in its potential to influence SEC policies and the broader regulatory landscape for emerging technologies like cryptocurrencies.
