India’s Enforcement Directorate (ED) has initiated a search operation targeting the founders of Emoillent Coin, a fraudulent cryptocurrency that duped 2,508 investors out of approximately $890,000. The scam, active from 2017 to 2019, promised returns of up to 40% and used a multi-level referral scheme to lure victims.
The perpetrators, including Henry Maxwell, operated through a mobile app and solicited funds via bank transfers, cryptocurrency exchanges, and cash payments. They dissolved the company, leaving investors with significant losses and allegedly used the stolen funds to acquire land assets.
This crackdown is notable as the first raid in the Leh-Ladakh region related to cryptocurrency fraud. India’s Financial Intelligence Unit has raised concerns about crypto-related money laundering, emphasizing the need for stringent regulations. The ED’s actions highlight the growing scrutiny on crypto scams, aiming to protect investors and maintain financial integrity.
