Judge Katherine Polk Failla postponed the trial of Roman Storm, co-founder of Tornado Cash, from Sep. 23 to Dec. 2, due to complex legal issues and voluminous documents requiring translation. This case examines whether the crypto mixer is responsible for users’ illicit activities, including over $7 billion laundered since 2019.
Storm was arrested in August 2023, a year after the U.S. imposed sanctions on Tornado Cash. His co-developers, Alexey Pertsev and Roman Semenov, also face legal action. Pertsev was sentenced to five years for laundering $1.2 billion but has appealed the verdict.
In response to the sanctions, Tornado Cash developers founded the JusticeDAO Foundation, gaining support from Coinbase and Edward Snowden. The case questions the accountability of developers for decentralized services used illicitly, despite their efforts to implement compliance tools.
The outcome may set a precedent for the legal responsibilities of developers in the decentralized finance space, impacting future innovations and regulations.
