Nigerian Minister Pushes SEC to Regulate Crypto

Nigerian Finance Minister Wale Edun has called on the SEC to regulate the cryptocurrency market amid rapid AI and virtual asset growth. The call came on April 19, 2024, when new SEC board members were appointed by President Bola Tinubu.

Edun emphasized the SEC’s crucial role in maintaining market integrity. He highlighted the risk of misinformation from crypto companies about their licensing. The new SEC board aims to implement strict oversight and follow global best practices in financial regulations.

Nigeria leads in Bitcoin interest, surpassing El Salvador. This underscores the urgency for clear crypto regulations. The recent actions by Nigerian fintech companies blocking user accounts for crypto transactions further highlight this need.

Minister Edun’s initiative aims to foster a sustainable and transparent financial ecosystem, adapting to the evolving digital landscape. This strategic move is vital for Nigeria’s economic future.
