SEC Proposal Could Change Funds’ Crypto Custody

The SEC proposed changes on October 1 to federal custody rules for registered advisers and regulated funds holding digital assets. The changes are not final and do not immediately authorize every fund structure or settle which institutions can qualify as custodians.

The SEC says the proposal aims to remove obstacles to some crypto strategies while keeping investor protections. The final rules would determine how managers must handle control of assets, segregation, lost or compromised keys, valuation and external oversight.
