Tether Gold Stash Surges Over $23 Billion

Tether’s Gold Reserves Surge, Outpacing Many Nations

  • Tether’s gold reserves reached approximately 148 tonnes, valued at around $23 billion as of January 31.
  • The company acquired about 26 tonnes in Q4 and an additional 6 tonnes in January.
  • Tether’s quarterly gold purchases exceeded those of most central banks, trailing only Poland and Brazil.
  • The firm now holds more gold than countries like Australia, UAE, Qatar, South Korea, and Greece.
  • Tether plans to allocate 10%-15% of its investment portfolio to physical gold moving forward.

This accumulation places Tether among the top 30 global holders of gold bullion, indicating a significant shift in asset management strategies amid rising market demand for gold. The surge in Tether’s holdings aligns with a broader trend of increasing central bank demand and growing investor interest in diversifying away from the U.S. dollar.

As of January, Tether’s reserves included over $17 billion worth of gold backing its stablecoin USDT and its gold-backed token XAUT.(Source)
