Stablecoin Milestone: Circle Secures Europe’s First License

Circle has become the first stablecoin issuer to obtain a license under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) regulations. This authorization, effective July 1, 2024, allows Circle to offer its USDC and EURC stablecoin services across Europe.

This milestone, achieved by securing an Electronic Money Institution (EMI) license from French regulators, positions Circle uniquely in the stablecoin market. Stablecoins like USDC, pegged to currencies such as the U.S. dollar, provide a stable trading option compared to volatile cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum.

The MiCA compliance dispels uncertainties around stablecoins in the EU, introducing strict rules including a daily issuance limit of $215 million. Circle’s compliance could challenge Tether’s dominance, especially as some platforms have delisted Tether’s offerings.

Currently, Tether’s USDT holds a market cap of $113 billion versus USDC’s $32 billion. Circle’s strategic positioning and upcoming IPO could establish it as a global stablecoin leader.
