US $84m asset seizure raises Tether questions

Tether told PYMNTS on Sept. 25 that its exposure to EQIBank was less than 0.034% of the Tether group’s assets. It gave no dollar balance and did not say whether the funds were part of USDT reserves or remained accessible.

The disclosure comes amid a US civil forfeiture case involving payment processor Capstone Limited. Court records list about $83.03 million in bank balances and roughly 1.18 million USDT, but do not identify the property as Tether’s. A court denied EQIBank’s request for the return of seized property; that ruling did not settle the forfeiture case or establish ownership.

Tether International reported $4.11 billion more in assets than liabilities as of June 30, but those figures cover a different entity and date from Tether’s exposure statement. The filings do not link the seized assets to USDT reserves, and Tether has not said that minting or redemptions were interrupted. The case therefore does not establish a loss to USDT holders.
