US Sanctions Russia-Linked A7 Network, Targeting $17 Billion in Crypto Transactions
- On Oct. 1, the US Treasury designated A7 as a significant transnational criminal organization.
- A7 sub-agents processed over $17 billion in dollar-denominated transactions from January to June.
- The network claimed to handle more than 2,000 transactions daily worth approximately $91.5 billion.
- FinCEN proposed barring financial institutions from transmitting funds involving identified A7 sub-agents.
- A7 uses its ruble-backed A7A5 token to bridge into more liquid assets like Tether’s USDT.
The sanctions aim to disrupt a shadow-payment system that has facilitated transactions for sanctioned entities in Russia and Iran. Financial firms must now comply with immediate obligations regarding blocked persons and assess their exposure to A7-related activities.
With A7 sub-agents involved in over $17 billion of transactions, the new measures significantly increase scrutiny on crypto intermediaries linked to this network.(Source)
