Yen Stablecoin Launches by Japan’s Megabanks

Japan’s Megabanks Collaborate on Yen-Backed Stablecoin Initiative

  • Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, and Mizuho are developing a joint yen-backed stablecoin framework.
  • The project is in the council and design stage, with a target launch by Japan’s fiscal year ending March 31, 2027.
  • This initiative aims to create a shared tokenized payment structure for commercial transactions, pending regulatory approval.

Japan’s largest banks are aligning to develop a regulated yen-backed stablecoin infrastructure that integrates with traditional finance using blockchain technology. This approach contrasts with crypto-native stablecoins by focusing on regulated reserves and trust structures for corporate use cases.

If successful, this project could set a precedent for bank-led stablecoins in heavily regulated markets, providing predictable settlement solutions for businesses by the end of fiscal year March 2027. (Source)
