The first half of 2024 has seen Ethereum, Bitcoin, and XRP leading crypto scam losses, totaling over $1.5 billion. Over 200 major incidents resulted in $1.56 billion in losses, a 293% increase from $480 million in the same period in 2023.
DeFi protocols were primary targets, accounting for 59% of the stolen value. Ethereum and BNB Chain were most frequently hacked, each accounting for 31.3% of attacks. A major breach on June 3, 2024, saw DMM Bitcoin lose 4,502.9 BTC, worth over $300 million.
A week later, UwU Lend, a DeFi lending protocol, lost $19.3 million. In February, hackers stole 213 million XRP tokens from Chris Larsen’s wallets. Multiple exchanges froze a significant portion of these stolen funds.
FixedFloat, a Bitcoin Lightning-based exchange, suffered breaches in February and April, losing over $29 million. This underscores ongoing security challenges within the crypto space.
These incidents highlight the urgent need for enhanced security measures and regulatory oversight in the cryptocurrency landscape.
